Building permit data by state
We add a state one place at a time. In Nevada we hold 14 cities and counties, home to about 95% of Nevadans, and in Texas the same API serves the City of Austin. Arizona and more of Texas are next. Tell us the places you need and what you would use them for. Requests decide the order we build in.

How we add a place
- Find who issues permits. A city issues its own permits. Land outside the cities is usually the county's, and some towns inside a county run their own office. We list every agency before we start.
- See what each agency publishes. Permits come first. Then we check whether fees, inspections and contractor names are part of the public record.
- Check the fields. Each permit needs an address, a type and an issue date. We also look for the job value, the contractor's licence number, the parcel number and the inspection and completion dates.
- Find the licence and property records. Contractor licences come from the state licensing board where there is one. Parcels and owners come from the county assessor.
- Check coverage before we publish. We compare our counts with the agency's own totals and with other permit data, and we measure the share of permits that carry a contractor, a parcel and a map point.
- Publish the gaps. Where a field is missing, the coverage page says so and gives the reason.
Nevada's gaps are on the coverage page, each with its reason.
